He came to the throne in the years of recovery after the rout at Vienna.
Sultan Süleyman II was born in Istanbul on 15 April 1642. His father was Sultan İbrahim I, his mother Saliha Dilaşub Sultan. He was a sultan of middle height, grey-bearded, stout and even-tempered. He was raised with great care by his mother Saliha Dilaşub Sultan, a devout, honest and intelligent woman who both taught her son what he needed to know herself and engaged tutors for him.
Having spent forty years of his life confined to a set of rooms, Süleyman II was a brave, devout, patriotic, merciful and courteous man. He was utterly opposed to bribery and dissipation. When he became sultan, military strongmen were throwing the country into disorder; he took them on and restored public order at least in part.
Süleyman II reigned for only four years, the last two of which he spent bedridden. He grew weaker by the day and died at Edirne on 22 June 1691. His body was brought to Istanbul and buried in the tomb of Süleyman the Magnificent beside the Süleymaniye Mosque.
