Sultan Ahmed II was born in Istanbul on 25 February 1643. His father was Sultan İbrahim I, his mother Hatice Muazzez Sultan. His mother saw to his upbringing and education. He knew Arabic and Persian and received a middling education. He followed affairs of state very closely and attended council meetings even when ill.

Ahmed II was a master of calligraphy. Gifted with an exceptional hand, he wrote out many copies of the Qur'an. He was greatly devoted to poets and to poetry. After a reign of three years, seven months and fourteen days he could not recover from the cirrhosis he contracted and died at Edirne on 6 February 1695. His body was brought to Istanbul and buried in the tomb of Süleyman the Magnificent.
