The Treaty of Karlowitz was signed in his reign; the Ottomans lost extensive territory for the first time.

Sultan Mustafa II was born in Istanbul on 6 February 1664. His father was Sultan Mehmed IV, his mother Emetullah Rabia Gülnuş Sultan, who was of Cretan origin. He received a strong education in the sciences. On the third day after coming to the throne he issued an imperial rescript setting out what he would do. In it he wrote: "We have forbidden ourselves pleasure, indulgence and ease."

"I have no need of riches or treasure. When it comes to it I will eat dry bread. I will spend my body in the way of religion. I will endure every kind of hardship. Until my service to my nation is complete I will not return from campaign. I shall certainly go on campaign in person."
