Sultan Osman III was born in Istanbul on 2 January 1699. His father was Sultan Mustafa II, his mother Şehsuvar Valide Sultan. Because he had lived confined in the palace until the age of fifty-six, when he came to the throne, he was of a nervous disposition. Even so he was a man of tenderness and compassion, and one who particularly disliked lies and bribery.
Since Osman III detested music, he removed all musicians from the palace. Not wishing to meet concubines as he walked about the palace, he had iron heels fitted to his shoes; hearing the sound of the heels, the concubines knew the sultan was coming and withdrew from his path. He reigned two years, ten months and eighteen days, changing seven grand viziers in that time; throughout his reign there was peace and quiet at home and abroad.
It is known that Osman III from time to time changed his clothes and went among the people. He died on 30 October 1757 of an illness caused by a boil that appeared on his body. He was buried at the Yeni Mosque beside Sultan Mahmud I.
